About

Generation Soil composts food scraps locally through the Bristol Living Compost Project

Generation Soil CIC is a Bristol-based community interest company closing the loop between food, soil and community. Through the Bristol Living Compost Project, they collect food scraps from households and businesses across the city, compost them locally using bokashi fermentation, and return the finished living compost to Bristol's gardens and growing spaces.

For visitor economy businesses, this means a simple, local alternative to standard food waste removal: food scraps stay in the city and become soil, rather than being hauled away and processed elsewhere. It's a practical, visible way for cafés, venues and hospitality businesses to divert food waste, and one with a story worth sharing with customers.

How can you get involved?

The service is built around everyday food scraps from hospitality and visitor economy settings, including:

  • Kitchen prep waste and food scraps from cafés and restaurants
  • Food waste from venues, events and hospitality spaces
  • Scraps from community and visitor-facing spaces more broadly

Benefits to your business

Signing up to the local food scrap collection service can benefit your organisation in a number of ways, including:

  • Food waste diverted from landfill and incineration, and kept within Bristol's local system
  • Sealed, clean buckets with no smell and no mess
  • Simple weekly swap-and-collect service, so there's nothing to manage day-to-day
  • A visible, tangible sustainability story to share with customers and guests
  • Support for a genuinely circular, community-led system rather than waste being exported out of the city
